Extensive reading helps ESL learners practise and obtain deeper knowledge of the language items and skills which they can use to make sense of content in their core learning areas.

Extensive reading, if taken seriously and interpreted in entirety, can encourage ESL learners to read for enjoyment. The ultimate aim of extensive reading is to build reading fluency and to deepen learners' knowledge of language items to get a better sense of how these items fit together communicatively. This allows them to process language faster and improve their comprehension.

build reading fluency and vocabulary
promote confidence, motivation, enjoyment
